Our next stop on our “On the Road” blog feature is Beach Bungalow located in fabulous sunny San Diego, California. San Diego is known for SeaWorld, sunshine and gorgeous beaches. Tritia Gustine is the owner of this blissful seaside store. She shares her love of children and the inspiration behind her designs.
What inspired you to open your own children’s store?
I was inspired by a love of design and a love of children that came together. It’s my favorite room in the home and it only made sense to specialize in them!
Why children’s furnishings?
Children’s rooms are one place in the home that you can have no rules and step outside the box. I find myself working with a huge variety of styles, from traditional to contemporary to transitional. It’s fun to do so many different looks and I feel that it allows me to grow as a designer. I am never bored!!!
What is your design philosophy? What inspires you?
My design philosophy is “Design with your child in mind.” I don’t want the room to look like me; I want it to reflect my client’s personality. I love to create spaces that my client’s enter the room and say “I have always dreamed of a room like this!”
What makes your store and you unique?
My store is unique because we are a true family business. My mom and I have worked together for 10 years. My kids come to the store every day. You can stop by and we are meeting with customers, handing out snacks, doing homework, working on presentations, and loving every minute! I strive to offer a “one-stop” shop. If we don’t have it, we will find it. I want my customers to walk away with every detail completed.
What is your favorite Newport Cottages piece or collection and why?
My favorite right now is the Beverly collection. I love the special detailing on all the pieces and the upholstered headboards and cribs!
About Your City
What is your favorite thing about your city?
San Diego is known for its beautiful weather, its February now and we are still getting our sunny, warm afternoons! I love that it is pretty much 70 degrees at any time of year. So blessed to look out and see the sun shining over the ocean.
What are some family friendly places that you love to frequent?
The beach is always an excellent place for family fun; there are plenty of great spots in Encinitas and La Jolla. We are also close to the museums in Balboa Park, Birch Aquarium and plenty of amusement parks like Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm.
What is your favorite restaurant and or must see place?
My family and I love to go to Ki’s restaurants when we are all together, they have amazing local organic food with something for everyone. For date night’s I love Cucina Enoteca in Del Mar or Whisknladle in La Jolla. It’s always fun to take a trip across the bridge to Coronado or check out all the great shops in Seaport Village.
